Life Is A Challenge

If you look at your life you may discover that most of your time and energy is dedicated to ordinary activities, like trying to attain material and emotional security, enjoying sensory pleasures, or establishing a good reputation. These things may make you happy for a short while but do not give you the deep and lasting contentment that you long for.

Eventually, your happiness changes into dissatisfaction and you find yourself continually chasing worldly pleasures. Whether by direct or indirect means, worldly pleasures can be the cause of mental and physical misery by encouraging one or more feelings of attachment, jealousy, and frustration. Furthermore, when you seek to satisfy your personal desires, you may often come into conflict with others.

If you cannot find true happiness in worldly pleasures, then where can it be found? If happiness is a state of mind, then the actual source of happiness lies with the mind, not with the external environment. If your mind is pure and peaceful you will be happy, no matter what your external environment. However, if your mind is impure and not at peace, you will never find happiness, no matter how much you try to change your external environment.

The aim of meditation is to nurture states of mind that promote peace and well-being, and to eliminate those states that do not.

What You Can Learn From Meditation

When practising meditation, you use a variety of techniques that help you:
  1. Stay in touch with the present moment.
  2. Be less caught up in negative thoughts.
  3. Deepen your awareness of yourself and your environment.
  4. Respond more skilfully to events in your life.
  5. Reduce and maintain stress, anxiety and depression to low levels.
  6. Enjoy a more wakeful and happier life.
