Best Relaxation Techniques For You – How To Choose Them

Do Yoy Know How To

Choose The Best Relaxation Techniques For You?

Most people have heard about relaxation techniques and know they are GOOD for them, but are UNSURE about how to choose the best relaxation techniques that suit them! So in this shirt post I explain how to make a more informed choice!

Firstly, there is no single relaxation technique that is best for everyone. When choosing a relaxation technique, consider:

  • Your individual needs;
  • Your preferences;
  • Your fitness level; and
  • The way you as an individual tend to react to stress.

The relaxation techniques that are right for you are those:

  • That you can relate to;
  • That fit in with your lifestyle; and
  • Capable of helping you to focus your mind and interrupt your everyday thoughts, so that the relaxation response can be activated.

You will most likely discover that alternating or combining a variety of techniques will maintain your motivation and give you the greatest benefits. The way in which you react to stress, may influence the type of relaxation techniques that will work best for you:

A. “Fight Stress Response”

If you have a tendency to react to stress by getting:

  1. Getting angry;
  2. Agitated; or
  3. Hyped up.

Then you are likely to respond best to stress relief techniques that calm you down such as:

  1. Meditation;
  2. Progressive muscle relaxation;
  3. Deep breathing; and
  4. Guided Imagery.

B. “Flight Stress Response”

If you have a tendency to react to stress by getting:

  1. Depressed;
  2. Withdrawn; or
  3. Spaced out.

Then you are likely to respond best to stress relief techniques that stimulate & energize you such as:

  1. Rhythmic exercise;
  2. Massage;
  3. Mindfulness; and
  4. Power yoga.

C. “Freeze Stress Response”

If you have a tendency to react to stress by:

  1. Becoming immobilized;
  2. Freezing; or
  3. Getting stuck.

Then first you need to rouse your nervous system in order to activate a “fight” stress response or a “flight” stress response.

So, in order to activate your stress response:

  1. Perform physical activities with a mindfulness approach;
  2. Focus on sensations in your limbs as you move;
  3. Choose activities that engage both your arms and legs, such as running, dancing, and Tai Chi.

Once your stress response is activated you can use the best relaxation techniques suitable for you.
